Our Story

DYVUM is built for divers who want more than just another dive — more skill, more confidence, more stories, a deeper connection with the ocean, and a community to keep exploring with.

From your first descent to the dives you will still be talking about years later, DYVUM is here to help you keep learning, exploring and belonging.

Where It Begins

DYVUM began with a moment I still remember clearly. After a spectacular dive, my divers hugged and thanked me immediately after they exited the water – yes, with all their gear still on - and I understood exactly what this was all about. It was never just about the dive. It was about the experience of descending into a world that asks everything of you, and the trust required to let someone guide you through it. That trust, once earned, stays with both people.

I have been underwater for more than 2,000 dives. I have taught people to take their first breath beneath the surface, to find calm in a place that once felt foreign, and to grow into divers who can look after themselves and the people around them. Somewhere along the way, one thing became very clear: the learning never stops. Not for my divers. Not for me.

Some of the moments I am proudest of now are not when I am teaching at all. They are when I see an experienced diver take the time to share with a newer diver about a struggle they once had, what finally worked for them, and the habits that made them better. That is the kind of diving culture I wanted to build.

DYVUM began with that belief: the right mentor changes everything, and the best diving experiences become even richer when we keep learning and exploring together.

Why DYVUM

DYVUM is built around a simple idea: becoming a diver is not a single course, a certification card or a checklist of skills. It is something you continue to grow into.

We put the diver first. That means giving honest guidance based on your readiness, ability and long-term development — not simply recommending the next course, trip or piece of equipment because it can be sold.

We believe in mastery through mentorship. Skills improve through repetition, good feedback, thoughtful practice and the accumulated experience of people who have been there before you. Learning continues on courses, on trips, over conversations, and eventually through divers mentoring one another.

And we believe diving is better when you have people to return to. The DYVUM Guild and its Houses were created to give divers an identity, a place to keep learning, and a community to explore with long after the course ends.

Descend into the underwater world.

Mastery built over time.

Belong to a community that keeps growing with you.

What Sets Us Apart

  • Low ratios. High attention. For Open Water, Advanced Open Water and selected recreational and specialty courses, DYVUM keeps instructor-to-student ratios intentionally low. More attention means more observation, more feedback and more time to correct small things before they become habits.
  • Guidance beyond certification. The conversation does not end when the course ends. DYVUM provides ongoing consultation on progression, skills, equipment, trip readiness and what would genuinely benefit you next.
  • Professional-led expeditions. DYVUM trips are led by instructors or divemasters, so learning continues naturally after certification. The aim is not to turn every holiday into a classroom; it is to have knowledgeable people around when questions, challenges and teachable moments arise.
  • The DYVUM Guild. Six Guild Houses, a diver identity quiz, shared learning, meetups, mentorship and future House activities create continuity beyond individual courses and trips. It is designed to help divers keep returning, contributing and forming real friendships.
  • Bilingual by design. DYVUM teaches in English and Mandarin, allowing divers to learn complex concepts, ask questions and receive feedback in the language they are most comfortable using.
  • A personal record of the experience. Selected DYVUM courses include a personal underwater portrait video, shot and edited by the instructor — not just as content, but as a memento of the diver you were at that point in your development.
  • Experience above and below the surface. DYVUM combines more than two decades of diving experience with a background in complex international event production. The same habit of thinking ahead, planning carefully and noticing details carries from the classroom to the airport to the dive deck.

Who DYVUM Is Built For

DYVUM is for new and experienced recreational divers who see diving as a lifelong pursuit rather than a one-off certification or occasional holiday activity.

You care about becoming capable, not simply collecting cards. You value sound judgement, proper diving etiquette, personal responsibility, respect for the ocean and the people you share it with. You want to keep learning, but you also want diving to remain fun, social and full of stories worth bringing home.

You may be taking your first course, returning after years away, planning your next expedition or working towards Rescue and beyond. Your certification level matters less than your mindset.

You don’t need years of experience. You just need the desire to become a better diver.

And when you find people whose standards and judgement you trust, you want to keep diving with them — and feel comfortable introducing the people you care about to the same community.

Who Founded It?

Pagan Chee, Founder of DYVUM
Pagan Chee
Founder · PADI IDC Staff Instructor
Specialty Instructor: Deep · DSMB · Enriched Air · Fish Identification · PPB · Sidemount · Underwater Videography · Wreck
2,000+ dives · 20 destinations · 150+ students · English & Mandarin

I founded DYVUM after more than two decades of diving, teaching and learning from the ocean. My relationship with it began in 2004, and after 2,000+ dives, 20 destinations and over 150 students later, I still consider the ocean one of my most honest teachers.

I have taught divers from their first breath underwater through professional-level development, across recreational and specialty diving. My teaching style is highly observational: notice the small things, explain the why behind the skill, and help each diver become capable of making good decisions for themselves.

Before DYVUM, I worked across luxury brands, boutique consulting firms and large-scale international events, including Bulgari, Mont Blanc, Microsoft Tech.Ed and LIMA. That career shaped the way I approach logistics and experience design today: plan carefully, communicate clearly, anticipate what people may need, and never leave important details to chance.

What matters most to me now is not simply how many divers I have certified. It is seeing them grow into capable, considerate divers — and eventually become the experienced person who takes the time to help someone newer.

DYVUM is the convergence of all of it: teaching, operational rigour, curiosity, mentorship and a lifelong love of the ocean.

The Name

DYVUM echoes divum, a rare classical Latin word for sky, sacred, the open air overhead — the idea of looking upward toward divine light even from the deepest water.

In Chinese, 昀渊 (Yún Yuān) carries the same idea across two characters. 昀 (yún) is the first ray of dawn light — the beam that cuts through the dark of a wreck or a cenote. 渊 (yuān) is the sacred abyss — deep, still water, held in quiet reverence.

Together, the name means one thing: a single ray of light within the deep. That's the whole philosophy of DYVUM, compressed into a name — Descend. Illuminated.
