Overview

Tucked away in East Nusa Tenggara, Alor is a remote volcanic archipelago sitting right in the heart of Indonesia's deep-water Pantar Strait. Far off the typical tourist trail, this isolated frontier is flushed by nutrient-rich oceanic currents that produce mind-blowing visibility often exceeding 30 meters. The result is a pristine underwater wilderness where cold deep-water upwellings keep the coral reefs extraordinarily healthy, vibrant, and virtually untouched by human hands.

Diving in Alor offers a spectacular combination that caters to both pelagic chasers and macro obsessives. Sweeping wall drop-offs and vast, endless anemone carpets host a staggering density of reef fish, while the cooler currents bring in the big stuff—including oceanic sunfish (Mola mola), hammerheads, thresher sharks, and even migrating blue whales. When you shift your gaze to the volcanic black sand bays, you are treated to world-class muck diving packed with rare critters like rhinopias, wonderpus, and frogfish.

What truly sets Alor apart is its sheer, unpretentious authenticity. Between dives, you will sail past dramatic volcanic peaks and quiet coastal villages, often greeted by local children paddling out on dugout canoes wearing handmade wooden goggles. Uncrowded, untamed, and breathtakingly diverse, Alor is the kind of rare, wild sanctuary that resets your standard for what a tropical reef should be.

Whale Patrolling Trips

Designed for those who want to combine diving with whale watching. We set out by boat to actively search for whales, and when conditions are favourable — based on our guides' expertise — there may be opportunities to snorkel or freedive alongside them.

Migratory · June–November

The whale migration passes through Alor during these months, offering a good opportunity to spot Pygmy Blue Whales — the second-largest animal ever to have lived (after the blue whale) — and Sperm Whales, the largest predator ever to have lived.

Present Year-Round

Short-finned pilot whales, melon-headed whales, and spotted, spinner and bottlenose dolphins, with an occasional whale shark or orca for the very lucky.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
What dive certification is required for this trip?
Advanced Open Water certification is recommended. Guests who require additional training can contact us directly.
How warm is the water?
Alor's cold-water upwellings are part of what makes the diving here so extraordinary — but they also mean the water runs cooler than most of Indonesia, sitting around 26°C. A 5mm wetsuit (or a 3mm layered with a hooded vest) is the sweet spot for staying comfortable across multiple dives a day. If you tend to run cold, pack a hood — those same upwellings are exactly what draws in the sunfish and thresher sharks, so it's worth staying warm enough to enjoy every minute in the water.
What time is the house reef open?
07:00–18:00 daily, from morning until sunset. Unlimited unguided house reef diving is included in every package.
Do I need to bring my own dive gear?
No — full rental sets and individual items (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins, dive computer, dive torch) are available to hire on-site, along with Nitrox 32% on request.
Is there a minimum age?
For whale watching specifically, the minimum age is 5 (the ½ day trip is recommended for ages 5–10). A minimum age for the diving package itself wasn't specified by the resort — enquire with Pagan if travelling with younger divers.
Do I need a visa?
Malaysian passport holders enter Indonesia visa-free for up to 30 days under the ASEAN agreement — no fee, no application. Other nationalities should check their own requirement.
What's the power plug type?
Indonesia uses Type C/F (round 2-pin), 230V — different from Malaysia's Type G, so bring an adapter.
What currency should I bring?
Optional rentals, extras and whale watching add-ons are priced and paid in USD on-site. Package prices are quoted in MYR.
