Overview

Komodo National Park sits where the Indian Ocean and the Flores Sea push through narrow channels between volcanic islands. Twice a day the tide drives that water across the reefs, and the current feeds some of the densest fish life in Indonesia: schooling fusiliers and jacks, reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse and, at the cleaning stations, reef mantas.

We charter the whole boat. One group, our own pace, and a route the captain plans around August conditions, when the north and central park have the clearest water of the year. We board straight from the airport on day 1, settle into our cabins and get the briefings done over dinner. The diving starts the next morning.

Expect current. Komodo's best sites are drift dives, and the reward is the life the current brings in.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
What dive certification is required for this trip?
Advanced Open Water certification with at least 30 logged dives is recommended. If you'd like to upgrade or train before the trip, contact us directly.
How strong are the currents?
Komodo is known for current, and at some sites it can be strong. Guides time each dive to the tide and brief every entry. Drift diving experience will help you enjoy it.
Open-heel or full-foot fins?
Either works, but bring your power fins — Komodo is famous for current!
How warm is the water in August?
Around 24–27°C in the north and central park, cooler than most of Indonesia because of the upwellings that feed the reefs.
What wetsuit do I need?
A 3mm full suit is enough for most divers. Run cold? Bring a 5mm, or add a hooded vest — with 3–4 dives a day it adds up.
Do I need to bring my own dive gear?
No — dive and snorkelling equipment is included in the package. You're welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
What should I pack for drift diving?
Must-haves: a dive computer, an SMB and a torch for the night dives. A whistle is recommended.
When is the last dive before flying home?
The last dives are on the morning of Monday 30 August, which leaves at least 24 hours before the flight home on Tuesday afternoon.
Will we go ashore in Komodo National Park?
We plan a land visit on the afternoon of day 5, weather and time permitting. The park's best-known stops are the Padar viewpoint hike, a ranger-led walk with the Komodo dragons, and Pink Beach. The captain confirms which on the day.
Do I need a visa?
Malaysian passport holders enter Indonesia visa-free for up to 30 days. Other nationalities should check their own requirement (most can get a visa on arrival, IDR 500,000). Before you fly, fill in your arrival details online at imigrasi.go.id.
What's the power plug type?
Indonesia uses Type C/F (round 2-pin), 230V — different from Malaysia's Type G, so bring an adapter.
What currency should I bring?
Package prices are quoted and paid in MYR. Bring Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in cash for crew tips and anything on the island — there's nowhere to use a card once we sail.
Is WiFi available?
The boat has WiFi, but signal comes and goes once we're inside the park. Plan to be mostly offline.
